Welcome to the homepage of the Brussels Centre for Language Studies at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel! BCLS is a research group within the Linguistics and Literary Studies department (LIST) in the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy.
Research at BCLS addresses a broad spectrum of thematic strands:
- Language and Society includes topics related (but not limited) to language variation, language history, (historical) sociolinguistics, language change, language contact, multilingual and intercultural communication (incl. translation and interpreting), terminology, language interactions, bilingualism and code-switching
- Language Learning and Education includes topics related (but not limited) to second language learning, language pedagogy, translator and interpreter training, multilingual education
- Language, Brain and Cognition includes topics related (but not limited) to psycholinguistic research (behavioural and experimental), neurolinguistic research (behavioural and experimental, in healthy and clinical populations) as well as translation and interpreting research
Applications of research at BCLS include consultancy for private and public organisations in the areas of language and education policy, curriculum design, language teaching material development, language assessment, speech pathology, and natural language processing.
Furthermore, the research centre hosts the Werkgroep Over Taal (WOT), a platform for the collaborative interchange of knowledge via presentations and workshops by international (guest-)speakers covering a wide variety of linguistic topics.

BACHELOR LEVEL:
Our Bachelor in Linguistics and Literary Studies is a new study programme with stem courses in English, that was launched for the first time in the academic year of 2022-2023.
MASTER LEVEL:
Our Multilingual Master in Linguistics and Literary Studies is an international, multilingual programme, open to students who master English (check the admission criteria).
