
Prof. Dr. Dan Van Raemdonck
Biography
Dan Van Raemdonck holds a doctorate in philosophy and literature from the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and is Professeur ordinaire of French Linguistics (mother tongue and foreign language) at ULB and Hoofddocent at VUB (Vrije Universiteit Brussel). He was Vice-Chairman of the Council for the French Language and Language Policy of the French Community of Belgium (2007-2020), and since 2021 has been Chairman of the Council for the French Language, Endogenous Regional Languages and Language Policy of the French Community of Belgium. Since 2023, he has been coordinator of the non-profit organisation Carta Academica. From 2000 to 2006, he was President of the Ligue des droits de l'Homme/droits humains (French-speaking Belgium) - Honorary President since then - and President of the FIDH-AE/AEDH (European Association for the Defence of Human Rights) - Honorary President since then -, then Vice-President (2007-2013) and Secretary General (2013-2019) of the International Federation of Human Rights Leagues (FIDH). His main research themes are a coherent, systematic and hierarchical description of the syntax of French, and the possible contributions of linguistics to the teaching of French as a first, second and foreign language (he advocates applicable linguistics); he is an expert in school grammar recognised by the FWB (participation in the Référentiel de français et de langues anciennes (FRALA) and the accompanying document Discours grammatical on grammar for the core curriculum; participation in the qualifier programme; 20 years of research, including 15 years subsidised by the FWB with numerous evaluations, published works, etc. ); he has also analysed certain types of discourse: comedic discourse, the discourse of homophobia, institutional discourse (of the Francophonie, of European construction...), the discourse of infomercials (advertorials) or the discourse of chatting. He is also the initiator and co-director of the international research platform GRAMM-R, based at ULB and VUB, and of the international platform DidaGramm, on research into the didactics of French grammar. He is director of the journal Travaux de Linguistique and director of two collections (GRAMM-R, published by PIE Peter Lang, and ELS, published by Presses Universitaires de Leipzig). Since 2023 he has been coordinator of the non-profit organisation Carta Academica. He is also a member of Les Linguistes Atterrées.
